Paco Rabanne 1 Millionarrived in 2008 in a bottle shaped like a gold ingot, and it has been impossible to be neutral about ever since. It sold enormously, it defined a stretch of late-2000s designer perfumery, and it is still one of the most recognizable fragrances on any shelf — which is both the case for it and the case against.

Eighteen years on, the fragrance has settled into an odd position: widely owned, frequently mocked, and still genuinely good at the specific job it was designed for. Whether it is right for you comes down almost entirely to whether that job is one you need doing.

What it smells like

The published notes are blood mandarin and cinnamon up top, rose and leather through the heart, amber and patchouli in the base. On skin the mandarin is brief and the cinnamon takes over quickly, and within twenty minutes what you have is a warm, sweet, spiced leather.

The rose is worth flagging because it is unusual. Rose in a men’s mainstream fragrance is rare, and here it is not floral in any obvious way — it functions as a rich, slightly jammy sweetness that keeps the cinnamon from being dry. It is a large part of what makes the scent distinctive, and a large part of why people who dislike it dislike it specifically.

The leather is the other defining feature. It is not the suede-and-smoke leather of a niche fragrance; it is a sweeter, more polished interpretation that sits under everything else and gives the composition weight. Combined with the amber and patchouli base, the result is dense, warm and confident, with none of the airiness that has characterized designer releases for the last decade.

Performance

Strong, and stronger than the concentration suggests. The community consistently reports eight or more hours from an eau de toilette, with heavy projection in the first two — performance that most modern eaux de parfum do not match.

That is a genuine asset and a genuine hazard. This is a fragrance where the difference between two sprays and four is the difference between confident and unbearable, and a lot of 1 Million’s reputation for being obnoxious is really a reputation for being over-applied by people who could no longer smell it on themselves. Who it is for

People who want to be noticed, in cold weather, at night. That is the entire brief and 1 Million executes it about as well as anything at its price. It works in a crowded bar where a subtle fragrance disappears, it holds up in cold air, and it is warm enough to read as an evening scent rather than a daytime one.

It also suits people who find the current designer landscape boring. The market has spent a decade making variations on fresh-spicy ambroxan, and 1 Million sounds like nothing else currently being released. Distinctive is not the same as good, but it is worth something.

Who should skip it

Anyone buying a first bottle. This is not a blind-buy. It is polarizing by design, and a beginner who buys it because it was recommended by a bestseller list will have a fifty-fifty chance of owning something they never wear. Our beginner picks are chosen specifically to avoid that outcome.

Worth addressing directly because it is the most common criticism and it is not really about the smell. 1 Million has been a top seller for the better part of two decades, and it is distinctive enough that people identify it. That means wearing it carries an association in a way that a generic fresh designer does not.

The verdict

1 Million is better than its reputation and worse than its sales figures suggest. It is a well-constructed, genuinely distinctive spicy leather with excellent performance, and it is completely wrong for most of the situations most people encounter in a week.

Buy it if you want a cold-weather going-out fragrance with real presence and you are not bothered by how recognizable it is. Use two sprays. Do not make it your only bottle, and do not wear it to work.
