How to choose your first cologne

Pick a versatile fresh scent first. Something clean and citrus- or aquatic-leaning — Nautica Voyage, Acqua di Gio, Dior Sauvage — covers the vast majority of daily life and is almost impossible to get wrong. Save the loud, sweet night-out scents like Versace Eros for when you already know you enjoy them. Start safe; you can always add character later.

A sample set beats a blind buy

This is the most useful thing on the page: don’t gamble on a full bottle you’ve only smelled on a blotter or read about online. EDT or EDP? Know what you’re buying

Go easy on the trigger

Is Dior Sauvage a good cologne for beginners?

What's the difference between EDT and EDP?

Eau de toilette (EDT) is more lightly concentrated, so it smells fresher up top and fades faster. Eau de parfum (EDP) has more fragrance oil, so it's richer and lasts longer. Neither is better — EDTs suit hot days and the office, EDPs suit evenings and cold weather.

How many sprays of cologne should a beginner use?

Two or three. You want people to notice it when they're close, not across the room. Spray on pulse points like the neck and chest, and if you can still smell it strongly on yourself hours later, you've probably used too much.
