The original eau de toilette (1996)
A salty-citrus marine accord over light woods — the fragrance that invented the aquatic genre and the reference point for every “fresh summer cologne” list since. Bright, clean, slightly sheer, moderate longevity. This is what most people mean by “Acqua di Gio” and, awkwardly, it is the version with the fewest good direct clones — because its whole character is restraint, and restraint is expensive to reproduce. Profumo (2015)
The darker one. Same marine DNA, but with incense, patchouli and a smoky depth that makes it an evening and cool-weather scent rather than a beach one. This is the version with the strongest clone market, and Jorge Di Profumo is the community’s near-unanimous answer to it.
Profondo (2020)
The mineral one. Rosemary, cypress, sea notes and a stony, almost wet-rock quality — the most modern and, to a lot of noses, the best of the three. Jorge Di Profondo aims here, and the community verdict on how close it lands is genuinely split, which we have reflected in its ranking rather than hidden.

1. Named target first
A clone that is close to Profumo is useless to someone who wants the original blue bottle. Every pick is labeled with what it is actually aimed at, and the two picks that are not aimed at anything — Odyssey Aqua, Dylan Blue — are labeled as alternatives. That is the single most useful thing this page does.
2. Published pyramid overlap
Jorge Di Profumo’s bergamot, black pepper and Sicilian lemon over lavender and geranium, into vetiver, sandalwood and musk, is recognizably the Profumo shape. Jorge Di Profondo’s sea notes, green mandarin, rosemary and cypress over mineral notes and amber is recognizably the Profondo shape. Neither is a coincidence, and neither is a claim that they smell identical.
3. Longevity, because this is the aquatic family’s weak point
Marine and citrus molecules are volatile, which is why the original eau de toilette is reported at five to six hours and why almost everyone who wears aquatics ends up reapplying. Several picks here are eau de parfum strength specifically to fix that, and Rasasi Hawas is on the list purely because it delivers a fresh fruity- aquatic profile with all-day reported wear. 4. Whether it is worth owning on its own terms
The uncomfortable truth about this category is that the original Acqua di Gio is not expensive and is heavily discounted. Unlike the Creed Aventus clone market — where the price gap is roughly tenfold and the case for a clone is overwhelming — here the gap is much smaller. That changes the advice, and the section below spells out how.
The honest case against cloning this one
On our Aventus dupes page the argument is simple: the original costs many times what the clone does, so even a partial match is excellent value. Acqua di Gio does not work like that. The original eau de toilette is a mid-priced designer that is frequently discounted, and it is the definitive version of a smell that a lot of cheap bottles approximate. If your budget stretches to it, the original is a completely reasonable purchase and you are not being ripped off.
The clones make more sense in two specific cases. First, if you want Profumo or Profondospecifically — those are considerably more expensive than the base eau de toilette, and the Maison Alhambra pair genuinely undercuts them by a wide margin. Second, if you want the aquatic profile with better longevity, which is what Hawas and Odyssey Aqua offer at eau de parfum strength. Buying a cheap clone of the base eau de toilette, to save a modest amount on a scent whose entire virtue is elegance, is the one case here we would not recommend.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Jorge Di Profumo if the darker, incense-tinged Acqua di Gio is what you are after. It is the best-supported clone recommendation on this page and it undercuts its target dramatically.
Buy Jorge Di Profondo if you want the mineral- marine profile and you accept that community opinion on the match is divided. As a salty, rosemary-and-cypress scent judged on its own terms it is good; as a one-to-one Profondo replacement, opinions differ.
Buy Armaf Odyssey Aqua or Rasasi Hawas if what you actually want is a fresh scent that lasts. Neither is a copy of anything; both are eau de parfum strength; both outperform the designer they sit near on reported wear time.
