An enthusiast's honest, priced, unsponsored take on men's cologne — and a plain statement of what we are and aren't.
Bergamot & Birch exists because shopping for cologne is worse than it should be. The rankings are full of paid placements, the “we tested everything” claims don’t hold up, and the prices quoted are usually months out of date. We wanted the opposite: a small, honest site that compiles the specs, pulls prices live, reports performance from the community rather than faking a lab, and gives a clear pick with a straight “skip this” when it’s warranted.
Who writes this
The site is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who’s genuinely into fragrance — the kind of person who reads the note pyramid, compiles the published specs, and does the cost-per-spray math for fun. That’s the honest framing, and we’re careful to keep it honest: Stephen is not a perfumer, doesn’t hold a fragrance credential, and there is no lab and no “expert panel” behind the curtain. What he brings is a habit of checking the label against the price and the community’s reported experience, and saying so plainly when a bottle isn’t worth it.
What we are not
We think you should know exactly what you’re reading, so here’s the list:
- Not a testing lab. We don’t wear-test bottles we don’t own, and we won’t claim to.
- Not perfumers or credentialed experts. We compete on published, reproducible method, not on authority we don’t have.
- Not sponsored. No brand pays to appear or to rank higher. We accept no free products in exchange for coverage.

How we make it useful anyway
Our whole method is public on the how we rankpage: compile the published specs, pull prices live and date them, attribute performance to the community, and rank with reasons rather than a made-up number. It’s designed so you can check every input yourself. When a cheap clone gets you most of the way to an expensive designer, we say so and link the cheaper one, because your money matters more to us than our commission.
