How they open and dry down
1 Million: spice first, leather after
The published pyramid runs blood mandarin and cinnamon on top, rose and leather in the heart, amber and patchouli at the base. The citrus is a brief flash; the cinnamon sets the tone almost immediately. From there it settles into a sweet, spiced leather, with the rose adding richness rather than reading as an obvious flower, and the amber-and-patchouli base keeping it dense and warm for the rest of the wear.
Eros: cold first, sweet after
Eros opens on mint and green apple, a cold, bright jolt that is the most memorable part of the first spray. Within the first hour the mint has mostly receded and the tonka bean and vanilla take over, with ambroxan and cedar underneath giving the sweetness enough structure to project. What people smell on you by the evening is sweet and creamy with a cool edge.
The real difference
Both end up sweet, but the sweetness comes from different places. In 1 Million it is spiced and warm — cinnamon, amber, a leathery depth — and it wears like a heavy coat. In Eros it is creamy vanilla with a cold mint edge, lighter and more playful even though it projects just as hard. If you have enjoyed cinnamon-and-amber scents before, 1 Million will make sense to you; if sweet-and-fresh is your thing, Eros is.
Performance and how much to spray
On paper they are level. The community reports eight hours or more for both eaux de toilette, with strong projection from each — well beyond what the concentration usually delivers.
That strength is exactly why application matters. With both, one or two sprays is the right amount and three is a mistake indoors. When people call either of them obnoxious, the problem is usually volume: somebody sprays four times because they can no longer smell it on themselves, and everyone around them still can. Our application guide covers placement and spray counts properly.
Where each one works, and where each fails
Nights out
Home ground for both. A crowded, warm bar full of competing smells swallows polite fragrance, and both have the density to cut through it. Eros is the designer pick on our night-out roundup. 1 Million does the same job with more heat and more attitude; it is the one to reach for when the night is cold and you want warmth rather than freshness.
Dates
All three picks on this page appear on our date-night list — Eros as the crowd-pleaser, 1 Million as the boldest option, and 9PM as the cheap sweet-warm choice. Across a small table, both need restraint: one spray, applied well before you leave. Eros is the easier of the two at close range; the spice and leather in 1 Million are more likely to divide.
The office and daytime
Neither. Both are too loud and too sweet for work or for daytime wear, and no amount of restraint fully solves it. If you need a work scent, that is a separate bottle, and it should be the first one you buy.
Seasons
This is where they separate most clearly. 1 Million is a cold-weather fragrance: cinnamon, amber and sweet leather turn syrupy in real heat, and it is at its best on fall and winter nights. Eros is also happiest in cool air, since cold tames its sweetness, but the mint top gives it enough lift to work on spring and fall evenings too. Neither belongs on a hot summer day. Eros sits on our winter roundup as the night-out pick; if you will mostly wear your going-out scent between November and February, 1 Million is every bit as strong a choice.
Which is more polarizing?
1 Million, clearly. It is instantly recognizable and love-it-or-hate-it by design. The cinnamon-rose-leather combination is exactly the thing people either love or cannot stand, and a first-time buyer has a real chance of owning a bottle they never wear, which makes it the wrong blind buy. Eros is far easier to like on first contact: sweet and minty is a profile few people find offensive.
Each carries some baggage. Eros reads young to many noses — a clubbing scent — and 1 Million, around since 2008, reads dated to some. Both are common enough that people will often know what you are wearing.
Price and value
In our September 17, 2026 price check, Eros was in the $50–$100 band and 1 Million sat above $150. Prices move, and the live buy buttons show today’s figures; we don’t quote prices in the text because they change constantly.
A bottle reserved for nights out lasts a long time, so the gap is paid over years rather than months. Still, when the cheaper bottle is also the easier one to wear, the value case is simple: Eros, unless the character of 1 Million is specifically what you are after.
The 9PM case
Afnan 9PM is here because plenty of people searching this comparison want a loud, sweet going-out scent and are not attached to either brand. It is a value-house original, not a clone. The published pyramid is apple, cinnamon, wild lavender, bergamot and orange blossom over vanilla, tonka bean and amber, which puts it in the same sweet-amber neighborhood as both designers without imitating either.
The community reports eight to ten hours from the eau de parfum, and it sells at value-house prices, a fraction of either designer. The caveats are the same as for the other two: it is sweet and heavy, wrong for summer heat or a warm office, and polarizing enough that sampling first is sensible. Our Afnan 9PM review covers it in full.
Who should buy which
Buy Eros if
You want one going-out fragrance and don’t yet know how you feel about spice and leather. You go out through more of the year than just winter. You like sweet-and-fresh scents and want something most people will enjoy. You would rather spend less.
Buy 1 Million if
You already know you like cinnamon, amber and leather. Most of your nights out happen in cold weather. You want a going-out scent with a distinct character rather than a crowd-pleaser, and you are not bothered by how recognizable it is.
Buy 9PM if
You want the sweet, loud, going-out effect for value-house money and don’t mind whose name is on the bottle.
Buy neither if
You need one fragrance for everything. All three are specialists. A first or only bottle should be something you can wear to work and in daylight, with a going-out scent added once that slot is covered.
