How to choose a cologne for your dad

Start with what he already wears

If he has a bottle he has worn for years, replacing it is a completely legitimate gift, and often the one he actually wanted. If you want to give him something new, use his current bottle as a guide to the family he likes: a man who wears a fresh scent is more likely to enjoy Acqua di Gio or Cool Water than a warm spicy one, and the reverse is just as true.

Warm or fresh?

Most of the picks above fall into one of two groups. The warm ones — Boss Bottled, Explorer, Oud Wood — suit cooler months, evenings and dressier settings. The fresh ones — Acqua di Gio, Cool Water, Sauvage — suit warm weather and daytime.
